“To design a more human world, we must change the priorities of government. We have to start from the notion that certain things must be in place for people to lead a decent life, that government’s overarching priority should be to lay the infrastructure, in its broadest sense, that will allow that to come about. Of course, there’s physical infrastructure—roads and railways, energy grids, and utilities. But we need human infrastructure as well—education and health services, early childhood education, mental health, relationship and family support. Infrastructure’s problem, though, is that it tends to need expensive upfront expenditure before the benefits flow. As a society, we already make a certain commitment to this idea. We subsidize our children’s education, for instance, because we think of it not as a cost but as an investment that will enable productive lives later on.”
